Two North Holland students, Stijn Hofstee(17) of Schoorl, and Danylo Matselyukh(17) of the European School Bergen have won a prize at the biggest competition for science students in Europe. Competing at the European Union Competition for Young Scientists 2011 in Helsinki, Finland, they won the Technology prize donated by the Federation of Finnish Technological Industries.
Both keen young scientists, Dan wanted his kite surfing friend Stijn to compete with him in the European Schools Science Symposium – but Stijn was so keen on surfing, he would only join him if it could involve kite surfing. Thus the idea was formed – to generate electricity using a surf kite. Months of design later, they made a first prototype and competed at the European Schools own competition in Brussels in March 2011.

As a prize they represented the European Schools at the EUCYS in September 2011 Helsinki. There they competed against the winners of the national competitions through the whole of Europe, and with many teams from outside the EU (USA, Canada, China etc). Despite this, they proved themselves to be among the best in Europe and the world by winning the special prize for technology given by the Federation of Finnish Technology Industries.
