European School wins Silver medal in School Chess Championships second year in a row

On Saturday January 21 the European School succeeded in securing a second place in the Bergen School Championships. This is already the second year in a row the European School wins the silver medal after winning gold 2008-2010. The winner this year was the Teun de Jager school from Schoorl who participated for the first time ever. The Van Reenen school came in third.

We all had a very nice day at the Bergen chess club and each and every European School participant was able to win at least one game. Stefano Jakaubek (P5N) was unbeatable all day together with Max le Blansch from the Lucebert school and therefore both also received a special personal best boy player award handed out by the mayor of Bergen!!

The team Europese 1 hence came in as second which also means they are now invited to participate in the North Holland finals which will be arranged in Haarlem on Saturday March 17. The silver medalists on team Europese School 1 were Tom Biasi-Gelb (S1F), Thierry Nalinkamba (S1N), Stefano Jakaubek (P5N) and Aaron Holmberg (P4N).

The Europese 2 team came in at 11th place after a really close race leaving positions 8-11 all within 1.5 points. On the Europese 2 team were Martin Spencer (P4E), Pauline de Ruiter (P3N), Tim Spencer (P2E) and Klemen Simonovski (P1E).

Attached the final score as well as pictures of the best boy player and silver team award ceremonies presented by the Mayor of Bergen, Mrs Hafkamp!

A web album with even more pictures from the day can be found at

Congratulations to all participants and especially to the medalists and first time participants! Looks like the school has a lot of new young talented chess players who have just started which is very good and important as two members of the silver team will next year be too old to participate.

Best regards,
Andreas

European School students win major international prize.

on Oct 04 in Events, Latest News posted by

Two North Holland students, Stijn Hofstee(17) of Schoorl, and Danylo Matselyukh(17) of the European School Bergen have won a prize at the biggest competition for science students in Europe.  Competing at the European Union Competition for Young Scientists 2011 in Helsinki, Finland, they won the Technology prize donated by the Federation of Finnish Technological Industries.

Both keen young scientists, Dan wanted his kite surfing friend Stijn to compete with him in the European Schools Science Symposium – but Stijn was so keen on surfing, he would only join him if it could involve kite surfing.  Thus the idea was formed – to generate electricity using a surf kite.  Months of design later, they made a first prototype and competed at the European Schools own competition in Brussels in March 2011.

As a prize they represented the European Schools at the EUCYS in September 2011 Helsinki.  There they competed against the winners of the national competitions through the whole of Europe, and with many teams from outside the EU (USA, Canada, China etc).  Despite this, they proved themselves to be among the best in Europe and the world by winning the special prize for technology given by the Federation of Finnish Technology Industries.

Would you like to know more about the Dutch, their ways of doing and their culture? Join the “Order of the Prince” project!

The Order of the Prince is a Dutch cultural society that took an interest in bringing the parents and staff of our school into closer contact with the Dutch ways of doing things and Dutch culture. It offers a program of 4 activities during the school year in which participants in small groups meet at the house of a  member of the Order to have a conversation about an aspect of Dutch culture or pay a visit to a interesting site. This year’s participants experienced the events as fun and interesting. The project can still take a few more participants.

Thank you for a great Euromarket!

To All Who Helped,

We would like to thank you all for all the time, hard work and effort you have put in to make the Euromarkt such a big success!

We have had several comments from people outside of school about how impressed they were and thought our school had such an nice atmosphere, many coming as far as from Haarlem, Amsterdam and Schagen. We had quite a few tables not participating this year and we could have had more food to sell but the revenue did not show that as much so you all did a very good job.

The bookmarkt had a record sale of 1000 euro’s. The German table sold an amazing 1000 euro’s, and was the top seller this year, congratulations! The Spanish and Italian tables were not far behind and other tables did a really great job too, some of them breaking their selling record. The flea market did very well, and both game areas gave the children plenty to do and tombola created a fun place to try your luck and with it’s sales, was placed in the top five profit makers! We were also pleased with the feedback we received on the passports which allowed children to see how fun it is to learn about all the countries that are present at our school.

We had so many helping hands setting up and clearing, cleaning, arranging electricity, lifting, carrying, giving up their space, letting us use their equipment, explaining, opening and closing, people helping setting up others tables, lending a tablecloth or a pen, showing their amazing talent, collecting boxes, donating items and making our children smile! Every little bit helped and it showed that if we come together it all works out!

Thank you and remember that you made a difference, and helped raising money for our children.

Have a wonderful summer holiday and we look forward to seeing you in the new school year!
