European School wins Silver medal in School Chess Championships second year in a row

On Saturday January 21 the European School succeeded in securing a second place in the Bergen School Championships. This is already the second year in a row the European School wins the silver medal after winning gold 2008-2010. The winner this year was the Teun de Jager school from Schoorl who participated for the first time ever. The Van Reenen school came in third.

We all had a very nice day at the Bergen chess club and each and every European School participant was able to win at least one game. Stefano Jakaubek (P5N) was unbeatable all day together with Max le Blansch from the Lucebert school and therefore both also received a special personal best boy player award handed out by the mayor of Bergen!!

The team Europese 1 hence came in as second which also means they are now invited to participate in the North Holland finals which will be arranged in Haarlem on Saturday March 17. The silver medalists on team Europese School 1 were Tom Biasi-Gelb (S1F), Thierry Nalinkamba (S1N), Stefano Jakaubek (P5N) and Aaron Holmberg (P4N).

The Europese 2 team came in at 11th place after a really close race leaving positions 8-11 all within 1.5 points. On the Europese 2 team were Martin Spencer (P4E), Pauline de Ruiter (P3N), Tim Spencer (P2E) and Klemen Simonovski (P1E).

Attached the final score as well as pictures of the best boy player and silver team award ceremonies presented by the Mayor of Bergen, Mrs Hafkamp!

A web album with even more pictures from the day can be found at

Congratulations to all participants and especially to the medalists and first time participants! Looks like the school has a lot of new young talented chess players who have just started which is very good and important as two members of the silver team will next year be too old to participate.

Best regards,
Andreas
